Breakout

Bounce a ball off a paddle to demolish a wall of bricks, clearing the screen without letting the ball past you. The skill is entirely in the paddle: hitting the ball off-centre changes its angle, so a good player is steering it toward the awkward corner bricks rather than just returning it. One of the purest arcade designs ever made.
