Sports games give you the recognisable shape of a real sport with the complexity trimmed back to something you can pick up in one go. Penalty shootouts, basketball free throws, pool and snooker, table tennis, golf reduced to a single power meter — these strip a sport down to its most repeatable moment and let you practise it. A few go the other way and invent physics-driven nonsense that only resembles sport from a distance, which is usually where the two-player games live. Matches are short, which makes this a good category for playing against someone next to you on the same keyboard. No sports knowledge is required for most of them; the rules that matter are explained by the first thirty seconds of play, and the rest is timing.
