The .io games are named after a domain extension rather than a genre, but they settled into a recognisable formula: drop into a shared arena with other players, start small, grow by consuming or defeating what is around you, and try not to hand your progress to someone bigger. There is no lobby, no account, and usually no match length — you join instantly and you play until you die, at which point you rejoin instantly. That immediacy is the whole appeal. Variants include snake-likes where your length is your weapon and your liability, cell-eating games about patient positioning, territory games scored on how much ground you can claim and hold, and shooters built on the same join-and-go structure. Early deaths are normal and cost nothing. The skill is knowing when being small and unnoticed is better than being big and hunted.
